As you may know by now…all of us here at www.tvchannelsfree.com are pretty big fans of the Discovery Channel. They’re commitment to excellent documentary programs is unmatched in today’s seemingly endless world of television. We’ve talked on this very blog about fantastic Discovery Channel shows such as Locked Up Abroad and Deadliest Catch. Today we have a brand new show for you that blows away any other show I have ever seen on any channel, and that show is called Stunt Junkies. Deadliest Catch

Don’t you just love the Discovery Channel? I do. And most of the TV junkies here at www.tvchannelsfree.com agree with me. They have so many great shows its almost too hard to count them all. Today we’re going to talk about one of those shows that has turned out to be one of the finest shows on any TV channel and that show is the blockbuster Deadliest Catch.

Deadliest Catch is a documentary series produced for the Discovery Channel by Original Productions. The series documents the events aboard fishing vessels in the Bering Sea during the Alaskan king crab and Opilio crab fishing seasons.

The Aleutian Islands port of Dutch Harbor (located in Unalaska, Alaska) is the base of operations for the fishing fleet. The show’s name derives from the inherent high risk of injury or death the crews face due to the hazardous work environment and nature of the work itself.

Deadliest Catch premiered on the Discovery Channel on April 12, 2005, and runs in over 150 countries. The first season had ten episodes, with the last airing on June 14, 2005. Season 2 was filmed one year later and began airing on March 28, 2006. Season 3 began airing April 3, 2007. April 15, 2008, was the 4^th season premiere. Season 5 premiered on April 14, 2009. Season 6 premiered last night. According to the Discovery Channel’s official site for Deadliest Catch:

“The Bering Sea’s toughest crews return for an all-new season of crab fishing that takes viewers through some of the roughest situations the captains and crews have ever had to face on the high seas. From treacherous weather conditions to crew conflict to the death of beloved Captain Phil Harris, the new season bring viewers into the intimate world of these crab fisherman…”

The series follows eight to ten crab fishing boats and their crews throughout two of the dangerous crab fishing seasons, the October king crab (frequently called “red crab” or “red gold” by crew members) season and the January opilio crab (”orange crab”, “orange gold”, “snow crab”, “opies”, or, as Northwestern crew member Matt Bradley dubbed them, “Norwegian dollars”) season. The show emphasizes the very real danger to the crew on the decks of these boats; situations are just as dangerous for the Discovery Channel camera crews filming them as they are for any other member of the fleet. The fleet’s captains are also featured prominently throughout the episodes, highlighting their camaraderie with their fellow captains and relationships with their crew, as well as their competitive nature against the other boats in the fleet regarding the hunt for crab throughout the fishing grounds.

Because Alaskan crab fishing is one of the most dangerous jobs in the world, the U.S. Coast Guard rescue squads stationed at Integrated Support Command Kodiak (Kodiak, Alaska) and their outpost on St. Paul Island, near the northern end of the crab fishing grounds, are frequently shown doing their own dangerous work: rescuing crab boat crew members who fall victim to the harsh conditions on the Bering Sea.

Top Gear

We watch a lot of TV shows at www.tvchannelsfree.com and have to keep track of quite a few channels in this age of satellite and on-demand TV programming. There is no doubt that some networks we generally like and some we generally would rather die than having to watch for a day. One of the latter mentioned networks is that silly BBC America. It’s pretty painful. Most of their shows are imported right from the UK and just…well…suck.

However, there is one TV show on BBC that can only be described as “just f***ing awesome” and that TV show is called Top Gear. The show is watched by over a quarter of a billion people every week in dozens of countries. For some reason, it just hasn’t really gotten much traction (no pun intended) here in the US…kind of like soccer I guess.

Top Gear in its current form originally went on the air in 2002 on BBC Two and features 3 hosts:

Richard Hammond

and the mysterious Racing/Test Driver known as The Stig

The hour long show is comprised by certain signature segments which include:

Races

Long-distance (or, as Clarkson refers to them, “epic”) races typically featuring Clarkson (or one of the other presenters) driving a car against other forms of transport. The challenges usually involve Hammond and May taking the same journey by combinations of plane, train or ferry.

Challenges

Starting in the 4^th season, one episode of each series has featured a film built around the premise of “Cheap cars”, where the hosts are given a budget (typically around £1,500, but it has been between £100 and £10,000 depending on the type of car) to buy a used car conforming to certain criteria. Once purchased, the presenters compete against each other in a series of tests to establish who has bought the best car. The presenters have no prior knowledge of what the tests will be, although the tests typically involve long journeys to determine the reliability and fuel economy of the cars, and a race track event to determine performance.

Starting in the 5^th season, many of the show’s challenges were introduced with the tag-line, “How hard can it be?”. These included challenges where the presenters attempt to build a convertible Renault Espace, being roadies for The Who, and participating in the Britcar 24-hour endurance race at Silverstone Circuit.

Star in a Reasonably-Priced Car

In each episode, a celebrity is interviewed by Clarkson. Then, Clarkson, the guest and the studio audience watch footage of the guest’s fastest lap around the Top Gear test track. The times are recorded on a leader board. For the first seven seasons of Top Gear, the car driven was a Suzuki Liana.

At the beginning of the 8^th season, the Liana was replaced by a Chevrolet Lacetti. Consequently, as the Lacetti is more powerful, the leader board was wiped clean. The format for setting a lap time was also changed: each celebrity is allowed five practice laps, then a final timed lap. No allowance is made for any errors on this final timed lap.

As of July 2008 Jay Kay set the fastest lap time of any celebrity in the Chevrolet Lacetti in the final episode of series 11, knocking Simon Cowell off the top.

There have been several mishaps in the past with this feature. For example, actor Sir Michael Gambon went around the final corner of the track on two wheels, prompting Clarkson to rename the corner in Gambon’s honor.

There is a separate Formula One drivers’ leader board. The Stig is top of this board, but the presenters consider Lewis Hamilton’s time to be more impressive; despite being set on a very wet and oily track, Hamilton’s time was only three tenths of a second slower than The Stig’s, which was set in dry conditions. In the past Clarkson has told drivers that they may deduct three seconds for a wet lap in the Suzuki Liana, making Hamilton’s lap even more impressive. All Formula One times, even those set after the seventh series, are set in the Suzuki Liana.

Power Laps

In the Power Laps segment, The Stig completes a lap around the Top Gear test track to gauge the performance of various cars.

The qualifications for the normal Power Lap Board is that the car being tested must be road-worthy, be able to buy it, and be able to go over a speed bump (sometimes referred to as a ’sleeping policeman’ by the show’s hosts) There is a separate unofficial board of times for non-production cars, such as the Aston Martin DBR9 Le Mans racer for example.

The Return of Bizarre Foods with Andrew Zimmern

I’m sure you all remember how fond we are of Andrew Zimmern here at www.tvchannelsfree.com. We were pretty excited when the Travel Channel announced the “new and improved” version of Andrew Zimmern’s blockbuster show Bizarre Foods called Bizarre Worlds back in the late summer of 2009. However, after watching the show it became apparent that the real venue for Andrew Zimmern’s strengths as a travel host was Bizarre Foods, which featured Zimmern going to a different (mostly exotic) locale every week and eating the weirdest stuff anyone could possibly think of. Bizarre Foods ended up doing about 47 episodes, which featured Zimmern going to 28 different countries as well as 14 different states in the U.S.

We are very happy to announce to all of you fans out there that the folks at the Travel Channel have opted to allow Andrew Zimmern to return to his roots by bringing back Bizarre Foods starting on Monday, April 26^th. Many of you more astute readers (and watchers) will notice that Zimmern is now on Monday nights instead of Tuesday nights. This is the time slot usually held by the Travel Channel’s other most favorite host, No Reservations’ Anthony Bourdain. I wonder if there is some bad blood in the Travel Channel’s production offices between the Bourdain camp and the Zimmern camp over this bit of new scheduling.

1. Mongolia
