Cartoon Network’s Evil Nocturnal Twin

As a child born in the late 1970s and growing up in the 1980s, I remember watching Nickelodeon which, back then, showed mostly cartoons imported from Japan and poorly dubbed into English…I’m talking about TV shows like Silver Hawks, Thunder Cats, Voltron…you get the idea. Nickelodeon was a kids’ network and ran kids’ programming all day and into the early evening. But then something strange happened. All of a sudden, the folks at Nickelodeon had a crazy idea to start running reruns of old TV shows to fill in all those hours when its usual audience (kids) were asleep. Soon everything from I Love Lucy to Three’s Company was being shown on “that kiddie channel” Nickelodeon after dark. This is probably how they came up with the name for this new “mini channel”…Nick At Nite.

Soon Nick At Nite became so popular with its late night audience, the folks at Nickelodeon split them off entirely and Nick At Nite has its been its own separate channel with complete control over its programming, advertising, etc ever since.

We here at www.tvchannelsfree.com believe we are seeing the same thing happen with the Cartoon Network (famous for such original programming as The Powder Puff Girls, Dexter’s Laboratory, and Johnny Bravo as well as reruns of older cartoons now in syndication) and its more recently added nighttime doppelganger, [adult swim].

Adult Swim is to Cartoon Network as Nick At Night is to Nickelodeon. While during the day the Cartoon Network shows its more kiddie-oriented TV Shows, after 10pm EST Adult Swim (whose logo is often presented in brackets at the bottom corner of the screen) takes over until 6am to cater to the more, shall we say ,“18+” (I only say that because I don’t believe “mature” is really the right word) crowd interested in a little late night entertainment of the animated variety.

While Adult Swim runs reruns of mainstream adult cartoons, such as Family Guy, American Dad, and King of the Hill, they also have a huge arsenal of original programming (mostly animated but more recently, live action shows such as Tim & Eric Awesome Show Great Job! ) that among our top 3 favorites include such shows as:

Squidbillies: an animated series about a family of “anthropomorphic hillbilly squids”, The Cuyler family, who live in poverty in the Appalachian region of North Georgia’s mountains. The show is produced by Williams Street Studios.

SuperJail!: Basically…the most bizarre, most violent, and most disturbing cartoon I have ever seen. If you’ve never seen it stop reading this now and go watch SuperJail! online immediately. It’s like Willy Wonka but set in a prison instead of a candy factory. The animation looks like a cross between The Yellow Submarine and Beavis & Butthead. Just trust me…watch this show at least once.

Metalocalypse: An amazing fictional portrayal of “DETHKLOK: The World’s Biggest Metal Band Ever.” If you want more details, check out the blog post we did right here on Metalocalypse when we chose it as our Cartoon of the Week a while back.

And don’t forget to check back here every day for our little TV blog. Until tomorrow, keep watching and keep coming back to www.tvchannelsfree.com to watch episodes of all your favorite TV shows for free!
