King of the Hill Series Finale

The End of an Era

I, as well as the whole crew over here at www.tvchannelsfree.com felt a collective sadness this Sunday when Fox decided to show the final 2 episodes of its hit show King of the Hill. Many of you may not know this but King of the Hill first appeared on our TV screens way back in 1997…that’s 12 freakin’ years! That show was on TV longer than I Love Lucy, for God’s sake! In fact, I believe the only TV show that has lasted longer than King of the Hill is Fox’s first family of animated situation comedy…that’s right, The Simpsons, which premiered its first episode in the fall of 1989. Can you believe this? The Simpsons has been on for 20 years now? Crazy, right?

King of the Hill was always a little bit different than the other popular Fox animated sitcoms it has often been compared to, such as Family Guy and the aforementioned Simpsons. Created by Mike Judge, the comic genius behind such films as Office Space and such early “mature” animated TV shows such as MTV’s seminal Beavis and Butthead, King of the Hill always stood apart because it was an actual TV show and not just an animated sitcom or whack-job cartoon. What I mean by that is that as the seasons progressed, the characters and events in King of the Hill changed over time. Let me give you an example:

In other animated shows such as Family Guy, the characters can get into any crazy misadventures the show’s creators can think of…then, by the next episode (or the end of that very same episode in many cases) everything is back to normal and everyone is ready for the next episode’s misadventure. Like when Peter accidentally blows up that children’s hospital or has the Statue of Liberty’s foot delivered to Quagmire as a wedding present…seriously ludicrous hi-jinx that could only be excused (or even explained) by the fact that the show would basically reappear next week as if nothing ever happened. That’s not a bad thing…but its one thing King of the Hill has avoided which makes it more unique. In an early episode of King of the Hill there is a propane explosion which demolishes the town’s Wal-Mart (called Mega-Lo-Mart in the show) and for the rest of the episodes in that season, every time the Mega-Lo-Mart would be shown or referred to it was still in the process of being renovated from the explosion…just like what would happen in real life.

It is this attention to detail as well as the excellent character development over the years (supplemented by hoards of celebrity guest voices from Johnny Depp to Brad Pitt to Kidd Rock and many more) that has made King of the Hill one of the www.tvchannelsfree.com favorite shows of all time. We know we have not seen the last of Mike Judge but there will never be another King of the Hill and we wanted to make sure this show the proper “Gone but not Forgotten” tribute it deserves…a little thank you for the 12 years of great episodes that kept us all watching each week.

And don’t forget to check back here every day for our little TV blog. Until tomorrow, keep watching and keep coming back to www.tvchannelsfree.com to watch episodes of all your favorite TV shows for free!
